About Engine 74 by Joe O'Brien
Engine 74; Hose Co 9 was organized in 1891 at 10615 S. Ewing Ave in a 2 story 1 bay frame fire house. In 1894 hose Co 9 became Engine 74 using an 1884 Ahrens steamer. In 1927 a new 2 story 1 bay brick firehouse was built on this site. This area is known as “East Side” with a natural port and close to the railroad, many firms located in the area, including the Chicago Steel works. The area started to boom with housing as immigrants from Germany, Sweden, Croatia, and Serbia settled in between the 1890’s and 1900’s. As the streets were laid out the alphabet was used from "Avenue B” trough “Avenue O”. Two notable letters missing. What should have been "AVE A” is State Line Road separating Chicago IL and Indiana. Ewing replaced "Ave K” in the East side is Ewing named after the 5th governor of Illinois. Engine 74 is known as the "East Side Alley Rats", and is a single engine house
