Character, style and personalization epitomize the Ward LaFrance pumpers that served Chicago throughout the 1970's. Producing replicas of these beautiful rigs that are small enough to fit nicely on a shelf, has been a painstaking process. Over 18 months, each of the hundreds of intricately detailed parts are designed, cast or fabricated, painted, decorated, and trimmed...then organized in small bins, ready for assembly. There is no substitute for the laborious tasks that each of the 35 skilled men and women perform. It is a sight to see as each team member patiently adheres each part to another, consistently analyzing the end result. As you scroll down the assembly pictures, take notice of the parts on each workstation and you will gain a greater appreciation for the process. And don't forget to add these Classic Chicago pumpers to your collection.
About Engine Co. 29 by Joe O'Brien
Engine 29 located in Bridgeport, just down the street from Mayor Richard J. Daley’s home. There could have been some clout used to get the new engine since it replaced a six-year-old rig. Engine 29 also protected Comiskey Park home of the Chicago White Sox, the ballpark is three blocks from the firehouse on the Southside of the city. Engine 29 is a single engine house(no other vehicles) built in 1925 the one bay one story firehouse that does not look like any other in the city. It was a fireproof building with glazed brick on the inside a concrete roof. The outside of the building is a gothic style, with Bedford stone.
