Over 18 months, each of the hundreds of intricately detailed parts are designed, cast or fabricated, painted, decorated, and trimmed...then organized in small bins, ready for assembly. There is no substitute for the laborious tasks that each of the 35 skilled men and women perform. It is a sight to see as each team member patiently adheres each part to another, consistently analyzing the end result. Engine Co 27's History by Joe O'Brien
The 1956 Mack B95 used by Chicago were equipped with 200-gallon tanks, this was a first for Chicago engines so the placement of these Engine’s was well thought out. These Mack’s also ran frontline for 20 years, over time the shops would retro fit some of them with booster reels, and square sidewalls over the rear wheels. Tiger stripes also appeared on bumpers, the shops would eventually replace the lights with aurora borealis, and even add large white numbers on the doors. Engine 27 was organized at 1244 N. Wells in 1874. The 2 story 1 bay Engine house had a watch tower when it was built. In 1907 a 1 story annex was built for a horse stable. In 1956 Engine 27 got their brand-new Mack B95 replacing a 1949 Mack L. In 1960 a new fire house opened for Engine 4 and Truck 19 about 3 blocks to the west on Division. Engine 27 would move in with Engine 4. When Truck 19 moved out to the new Firehouse with Engine 14, Truck 10 move into the Firehouse on Division with Engine 4, and 27. Truck was also using the 1959 Mack B/Magirus, which will look great next to Engine 27. Later this rig would be used by Engine 25.
